Elder Arts
Elder Arts: Creative growth, connection, and self-expression with fellow life travelers
In this class, Ann Marie invites older adults to reflect on their life stories and explore present-day identities through collage, mixed media, and other hands-on approaches. No art background is needed—just curiosity. Come for one class, or make this a weekly practice!
Each session introduces a theme that guides participants in making new meaning from past experiences, with opportunities to incorporate personal materials and self-reflections into their artmaking. Sessions also include journaling and mindfulness prompts that participants can continue on their own. We close by witnessing one another’s artwork in a supportive way—inviting self-acceptance and opening possibilities for further discovery.
Sample themes/artmaking:
- Family, kin, and community: Paper weaving. Transform cards, letters, and other personal correspondence into a new image honoring strands of care and connection
- Present-day self & strengths: Hand Self-portrait. Drawing or tracing one’s hand and selecting images/adding color/textures/lines to represent and reflect on all you hold.
- What matters most: Textile arts & reflective writing. Participants use fabric, beads or buttons, and accessible sewing techniques to create beaded packets to encase a hope, dream, blessing or prayer written on a piece of paper. These messages may be intended for oneself, loved ones, or one’s community.
